No Shave November - How the tradition started our company

No Shave November is a term that many are familiar with, but did you know it is what brought our company to life in 2015? Below, I will share some quick information about the tradition for anyone who is unfamiliar with it, and then I will dive deeper into how WeatherBeard was formed because of it.

So, what is No Shave November really about?

No Shave November is a campaign that was created to raise awareness for men's health issues, such as prostate and testicular cancer. During the month of November, it is encouraged for all men to not shave or cut their hair for 30 days as they embrace the freedom to grow out their wild man mane in honor of those who do not have the opportunity to do so. In return, it is encouraged to take the money that you would have spent at the barber and donate it to cancer prevention resources.

Now, you're probably wondering how this tradition started our company. Grab a drink, sit back in your favorite chair, and read on!

It all started when I was 25. I had never grown a beard in my life and decided to participate in No Shave November to see how growing a beard would look and feel. At first, it was awful. My beard grew in very patchy and I developed the dreaded beard itch, so I decided to google things that would help me and that is when I stumbled upon a DIY beard oil recipe.

At the time, my wife and I had several bottles of essential oils lying around our apartment that we were using for aromatherapy purposes. After doing some research, I took a few of my favorites and set them to the side for experimentation. I also began to order glass dropper bottles and stopped at my local health food store to pick up small bottles of basic carrier oils.

Ready, set, let the experimentation began!

Once I had everything I needed, I sat down at the kitchen table of my two bedroom apartment and started mixing some blends to try. After using them for a few weeks, I noticed such a huge change in the way my beard felt.

The itch was gone and my skin and hair weren't dry anymore. Having a beard wasn't so bad after all! Filled with excitement, I took the blends I created to work so that I could get feedback from my coworkers. Long story short, they were pretty impressed with them and told me that I could probably start selling them at local stores or even online.

Having this extra boost of confidence made me want to try, so my wife and I purchased more ingredients and containers. After I created 4 different scents, my wife started to design a very basic label and we began sharing online about what we were doing. People were expressing interest so we decided to start an Etsy shop and when we got our first sale we were ECSTATIC! Eventually, one sale turned into five and then reviews started to come in.

Here's a review from December 17, 2015

"Have tried 4 different beard oil companies and this is by far my favorite. Absolutely love it and will not buy anymore unless it's from this company. Love it"

Talk about WOW.

Fast forward to 2019, business was continuing to pick up and I came to a point where I could not maintain it plus a full time job. In February, I took the leap of faith to quit my job in order to pursue WeatherBeard full time alongside with my wife. It was one of the most rewarding, yet scariest moments of my life. We learned a lot that year about our business and also had time to think about our goals moving forward.

In May of 2021, WeatherBeard 2.0 was born. Our brand completely changed as we released new formulas and an updated look. It was a big change for us, but we knew it was something that had to be done moving forward and we couldn't be more happy about it! A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us since 2015 and to all of our new supporters that we have gained along the way. Without you, our business would not be where it is today!
